Fundraiser and Party for Drew at Adela |
August 25th, 2011 can only be described as a truly magical night. It was a fundraiser for Drew Miller, a good friend of mine from Junior High School, who is battling ALS/Lou Gehrig's Disease. The restaurant and bar were packed, the energy was pumping, the silent auction was bustling, and the food and drinks were flowing... but, most importantly, Drew had an awesome night! Every time I looked over at him he was smiling and "talking" (through his computer) to someone. Including the generous amount of money that Adela (in Fell's Point) donated as a portion of what we brought in that evening, the event has raised almost $10,000 to help Drew and his medical bills. That is amazing!! I believe that we all had a night to remember in honor of a very brave man! Randi Gordon
Thank you for your support of Drew! |

Drew Miller is a 45-year-old father of two who resides in Columbia Maryland. Drew has two daughters. One is a junior in college and the other is a senior in high school. Drew's career has been in the television and broadcasting business most recently serving as the Broadcast Production Manager at the United States Senate.
In March of 2010, Drew was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Drew's health has deteriorated rapidly since being diagnosed. He no longer has use of his limbs and cannot speak. His lung capacity is very limited. There is no known cause or cure for ALS.
In addition to being a very cruel disease, ALS is very expensive. Drew’s motorized wheelchair cost $30,000. Drew communicates through a computer controlled by blinking of the eye technology. The cost of the system was $18,000. His insurance company paid $1,000 of the cost. Drew requires round-the-clock in home healthcare. The cost of such care is in excess of $14,000 per month. This cost is not covered by health insurance.
Drew's attitude is incredibly positive. He is an inspiration to his family and friends. Drew's courage and outlook is discussed in a wonderful article in the Baltimore Jewish Times. Also be sure to read the editor's column.
